And Beyond

“I have seen enough beauty in this world, dear Reader, to say with confidence that even the most destitute, terrifying, villainous sorrow we can experience as humans on this planet is laced with the most intricate patterns of color, music, triumph, renewal.”

Dear Future People of the Earth,

I hope this message finds you in good health. I hope you find the messages we send into the future, purposefully or otherwise, deserving of your approval. For now, the messages being broadcast around the world to the people of the new millennium, entering our homes, our work, our cars, our pockets, can be hard to decipher, and at times all together distracting from what is important. It is important to not let this get to you, as there is always something pleasant in this world to turn your attention to. I have seen enough beauty in this world, dear Reader, to say with confidence that even the most destitute, terrifying, villainous sorrow we can experience as humans on this planet is laced with the most intricate patterns of color, music, triumph, renewal. When we experience this life, we must not try to cover up and ignore the bad, but filter through, and enhance the breathtaking wondrous joy that is our inalienable right to be a part of.

Certainly the hard lessons are being learned during my time here. Lessons of soil carbon, ocean warmth, species declines, population stability, all are important and at times overwhelming and bleak. Yet, the process of discovering all these things offers us the chance to live a better life on this planet. As humans, we may capture this knowledge, expand its potential, shape it towards a better future. To do this we must understand our direction as a people. All of the time my ancestors put in sailing on a wooden ship to a new country, working as hard as they knew how on this land, has afforded me the opportunity to be here and write you this letter. Their ancestors before them labored and laughed, and soon afforded them a chance to pack up all they could and sail unknown waters.

It is my goal to create for you a world where you feel fortunate to have had such ancestors. It is my hope that as you read this, you find the strength to accept and carry on this tradition with all of its imperfections in tow. I hope, Future Reader, that you are blessed with the continuation of life on Earth.
